Jeux D'Eau (Water Games) is a piano tone poem by Maurice Ravel. Like an Impressionist painter, Ravel wanted to evoke the playful mood and liquid sensations of water splashing in a fountain. The Fountains in question, are those from the Villa D'Este, south of Rome. Franz Liszt also wrote a piano composition entitled the Fountains of Villa D'Este which undoubtedly influenced Ravel. My Jeux D'eau strives to capture similar sensations of sound and movement in a still pond during a gentle rain. The shimmering quality of the "water" is created by juxtaposing pixilated shapes with smooth ones. |
